Oscar Nominations 2019 Breakdown

Well, literally an hour after I posted about my predictions, the actual nominations came out. Got it in under the wire! I got a lot right, but some wrong. I have been honest and kept it as it was in the last post. Have a gander below on my thoughts and who I got right and wrong! How did you do??

Best Picture

The Favourite – CORRECT
Vice – CORRECT
BlacKkKlansman  – CORRECT
Roma – CORRECT
Green Book – CORRECT
If Beale Street Could Talk – CORRECT
A Star Is Born – CORRECT
Black Panther – CORRECT
A Quiet Place  – WRONG

Well you can’t get them all right and A Quiet Place was my surprise punt for the nominations! Pretty pleased with how that has gone… Now, who will win? I think The Favourite will nab it ahead of Roma purely because I don’t think the Academy will want Netflix to win Best Picture at the first attempt.

Best Director

Alfonso Cuaron (Roma) – CORRECT
Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born) –WRONG (Pawel Pawlikowski for Cold War)
Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite) – CORRECT
Spike Lee (BlacKkKlansman) – CORRECT
Adam McKay (Vice) – CORRECT

Ohhh so close! I never really thought Bradley Cooper deserved a Best Director nomination, but I think a lot of people still expected it. I am happy that Pawlikowski did get in instead though! Surprised but pleased. I think Cuaron will still win, but don’t rule out Pawlikowski!

Best Actress

Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born) – CORRECT
Olivia Colman (The Favourite) – CORRECT
Glenn Close (The Wife) – CORRECT
Yalitza Aparicio (Roma) – CORRECT
Viola Davis (Widows) – WRONG (Melissa McCarthy for Can You Ever Forgive Me?… What the actual hell is that decision!?!?! Sorry)

I would call it a snub as Viola Davis’s performance was so much stronger than McCarthy’s. Truly disappointed in that decision and I will struggle to work it out. Anyway, Olivia Colman for the win, because, seriously no one was touching that performance this year other than Yalitza Aparicio.

Best Actor

Christian Bale (Vice) – CORRECT
Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody) – CORRECT
John David Washington (BlacKkKlansman) – WRONG (Viggo Mortensen for Green Book)
Willem Defoe (At Eternity’s Gate) – CORRECT
Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born) – CORRECT

I thought Washington had a nomination sorted, but sadly not, with Mortensen getting it instead. For me, it will be between Bale and Malek for the win, with my preference towards Bale due to all the issues I have with Bohemian Rhapsody.

Best Supporting Actress

Amy Adams (Vice) – CORRECT
Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk) – CORRECT
Emma Stone (The Favourite) – CORRECT
Rachel Weisz (The Favourite) – CORRECT
Emily Blunt (A Quiet Place) – WRONG (Marina de Tavira for Roma)

I am surprised, I thought my five were pretty spot on for this one, I didn’t even consider de Tavira for it. Silly me! I am sad for Emily Blunt as she deserved a nomination for one of her two roles this year and didn’t get any. I think King will get it again, as she did with the Golden Globes, but Adams has never won and this might be her time… A tough one for sure.

Best Supporting Actor

Mahershala Ali (Green Book) – CORRECT
Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) – CORRECT
Timothee Chalamet (A Beautiful Boy)  – WRONG (Sam Elliott for A Star Is Born)
Sam Rockwell (Vice) – CORRECT
Adam Driver (BlacKkKlansman) – CORRECT

A lot of predictions had Elliott in the nominations, but had Rockwell the one missing out! I thought Chalamet had done enough, but seemingly not. No real surprises otherwise. It is between Ali and Grant for the win from what reports say. As with my previous post, I will go with Ali!

Best Foreign Language Picture

Shoplifters (Japan) – CORRECT
Capernaum (Lebanon) – CORRECT
Roma (Mexico) – CORRECT
Cold War (Poland) – CORRECT
Burning (South Korea) – WRONG (Never Look Away from Germany)

Oh… I thought out of all of the categories that this one was the lock. I am very surprised that Burning did not get in! Review for that coming in the next week or so by the way. Yes, very surprised, but all the films in the narrowed list were strong. Roma to win of course, but I would prefer if it was Shoplifters.

Best Original Screenplay

Deborah Davis & Tony McNamara (The Favourite) – CORRECT
Adam McKay (Vice) – CORRECT
Alfonso Cuaron (Roma) – CORRECT
Nick Vallelonga, Brian Currie & Peter Farrelly (Green Book) – CORRECT
Bryan Woods, Scott Beck & John Krasinski (A Quiet Place) – WRONG (First Reformed by Paul Shrader)

The Academy doesn’t seem to like horror movies, do they? Very disappointed that A Quiet Place did not get the nomination it deserved. I haven’t seen First Reformed comment on it, so I can’t give a definite opinion on whether it should be there! McKay to win, because there have to be a few surprises!

Best Animated Feature

Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse  – CORRECT
Incredibles 2 – CORRECT
Mirai – CORRECT
Isle of Dogs – CORRECT
Ralph Breaks the Internet – CORRECT

Finally!!! I got a clean sweep! I thought it wasn’t going to happen! To be fair these were all nailed on with a big heavy hammer! Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse to sling away with this one.

Best Adapted Screenplay

Debra Granik & Anne Rosellini (Leave No Trace) – WRONG (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs by Joel and Ethan Coen)
Barry Jenkins (If Beale Street Could Talk) – CORRECT
Spike Lee, Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz & Kevin Willmott (BlacKkKlansman) – CORRECT
Eric Roth, Bradley Cooper & Will Fetters (A Star Is Born) – CORRECT
Armando Iannucci, David Schneider, Ian Martin, Peter Fellows & Fabien Nury (The Death of Stalin) – WRONG (Can You Ever Forgive Me? By Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty)

Sigh… I do not understand how Can You Ever Forgive Me? Is getting so many nominations. It was not a good film and legitimate good films and performances are being overlooked because of it. A Star Is Born to win, but I would prefer if it was Barry Jenkins for If Beale Street Could Talk.

Best Original Score

Black Panther  – CORRECT
First Man – WRONG (BlacKkKlansman by Terence Blanchard)
If Beale Street Could Talk – CORRECT
Mary Poppins Returns – CORRECT
A Quiet Place – Wrong (Isle of Dogs by Alexandre Desplat)

I never saw Isle of Dogs getting a nomination for Original Score, so more fool me for that one! Mary Poppins Returns to float up into the sky with a nice Oscar.

Best Original Song

“When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings” from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, – CORRECT
“All The Stars” from Black Panther, – CORRECT
“Trip A Little Light Fantastic” from Mary Poppins Returns, – WRONG (The Place Where Lost Things Go)
“Shallow” from A Star Is Born, – CORRECT
“Suspirium” from Suspiria – WRONG (I’ll Fight in RBG)

You had the chance to have Thom Yorke perform at your awards show Academy, silly rabbits! I got the wrong Mary Poppins Returns song out of the two in the narrowed list. I thought they would have gone with the more upbeat song, but there we go. We all know who is going to win this one, so let’s just move on.

Best Cinematography

Alfonso Cuaron (Roma) – CORRECT
James Laxton (If Beale Street Could Talk) – WRONG (Caleb Deschanel for Never Look Away)
Lukasz Zal (Cold War) – CORRECT
Robbie Ryan (The Favourite) – CORRECT
Linus Sandgren (First Man) – WRONG – (Matthew Libatique for A Star Is Born)

I got Zal right! But Libatique still got in and probably rightly so. I haven’t seen Never Look Away, so I have no idea how it looks, but I will have to look this one up. I am going to go with Zal to win it actually, why not!?

Best Documentary Feature

Dark Money – WRONG (Hale County This Morning, This Evening)
Free Solo – CORRECT
RBG – CORRECT
Three Identical Strangers – WRONG ( Mind the Gap)
Won’t You Be My Neighbour? – Wrong (Of Fathers and Sons)

I got so many wrong here! I haven’t seen the three I got wrong, so I am going to use that as my excuse. I definitely thought Three Identical Strangers would at least get the nomination. RBG to win!

Best Visual Effects

Avengers: Infinity War – CORRECT
Blank Panther – WRONG (Solo: A Star Wars Story)
Ready Player One – CORRECT
First Man – CORRECT
Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (Christopher Robin)

I am fuming, FUMING! I had Christopher Robin in my original list and cut it out right before I posted the predictions out! Foolish Gilliland! Not too much of a surprise other than Solo getting a nomination… How did that get in ahead of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom? Avengers to win.

Best Costume Design

Ruth Carter (Black Panther) – CORRECT
Sandy Powell (The Favourite) – CORRECT
Alexandra Byrne (Mary Queen of Scots) – CORRECT
Coleen Atwood (Fantastic Beasts: The Grimes of Grindelwald) – WRONG (Sandy Powell for Mary Poppins Returns)
Andrea Flesch (Colette) – WRONG (Mary Zophres for Ballad of Buster Scruggs)

I know they occasionally let double nominees in the same category, but I didn’t think it would happen this year, but well done to Sandy Powell!! I still think Black Panther is going to win though.

Best Film Editing

The Favourite – CORRECT
Bohemian Rhapsody – CORRECT
A Star Is Born – WRONG (Vice)
First Man – WRONG (BlacKkKlansman)
Green Book – CORRECT

I really don’t know who will win this one. It could be a coin toss! At the minute I am going with The Favourite.

Best Sound Mixing

A Quiet Place – WRONG (Black Panther)
A Star Is Born – CORRECT
Bohemian Rhapsody – CORRECT
Mary Poppins Returns – WRONG (Roma)
First Man – CORRECT

When I think about Black Panther, one thing I do not think about is how good the sound was in the film. It was okay, but nothing staggering. Ah well. Roma got another nomination for this which makes me think it will not do well on the night… Almost as if to make a point to Netflix etc… Bohemian Rhapsody to win.

Best Sound Editing

A Quiet Place – CORRECT
A Star Is Born – WRONG (Black Panther)
Bohemian Rhapsody – CORRECT
Mary Poppins Returns – WRONG (First Man)
The Favourite – WRONG (Roma)

Different lists did come about, a little surprised at the actual nominations, but ah well. I really hope A Quiet Place wins this one.

Best Production Design

Hannah Beachler (Black Panther) – CORRECT
Nathan Crowley (First Man) – CORRECT
Fiona Crumbie (The Favourite) – CORRECT
John Myhre (Mary Poppins Returns) – CORRECT
James Merifield (Mary Queen of Scots) – WRONG (Eugenio Caballero for Roma)

I told you in the previous post that if Roma was going to get a lot of nominations then Caballero would get the nod! I am going to go with Mary Poppins to win at the minute, I might change my mind though!

Best Makeup

Mary Queen of Scots – CORRECT
Stan & Ollie – WRONG (Border)
Vice – CORRECT

Stan & Ollie got robbed, I am just going to say it, flat out robbed. I haven’t seen Border, but I can’t imagine it is in any way similar workwise. Vice to win this one… Okay just saw a trailer for Border, it deserves it’s nomination, maybe instead of Mary Queen of Scots actually.

I guess I should not have put too much thought into A Quiet Place, which is a damn shame that it and Krasinski and Blunt have been ignored so much. I will have a more definitive breakdown of who I will think will win soon, but let me know who you think should win. Are you surprised by some of the nominations? Let me know!
