Academy Awards 2019 predictions

Welcome to another year of the Academy Awards! I offered to host, but they said no because they are fools! Anyway. I am here to provide a little breakdown of who I think should win and who will win all of the non-short categories. For the short categories, I have only said who I think will win as I haven’t had the chance to catch any of those films and it would be a serious disservice to predict a winner without doing that. Without further ado let’s get on with this thing… Sorry for how long it is.

Best Picture

The Favourite
Green Book
Bohemian Rhapsody
If Beale Street Could Talk
A Star Is Born
Black Panther

Who Should Win – Roma
Who Will Win – Green Book

I just don’t think that they will give a Netflix film the Best Picture Award at its first attempt. They will want to make Netflix work very hard for it and so will give it to Green Book. A good film, no doubt, but not the best this year in my opinion. The Favourite or Roma should win this hands down. It will be interesting as the rest of the night will dictate if Roma wins I think.

Best Director

Alfonso Cuaron (Roma)
Pawel Pawlikowski (Cold War)
Yorgos Lanthimos (The Favourite)
Spike Lee (BlacKkKlansman)
Adam McKay (Vice)

Who Should Win – Spike Lee
Who Will Win  Alfonso Cuaron

Samuel L Jackson said that Spike Lee doesn’t need to win the award, his work will speak for him. I agree, but boy wouldn’t it be nice if he did win? It should be his, but I think the Academy will go with Cuaron. I really hope not, but there we go.

Best Actress

Lady Gaga (A Star Is Born)
Olivia Colman (The Favourite)
Glenn Close (The Wife)
Yalitza Aparicio (Roma)
Melissa McCarthy (Can You Ever Forgive Me?)

Who Should Win – Olivia Colman
Who Will Win – Glenn Close

Glenn Close has been nominated a million times before and never won, this is potentially her last true attempt at winning. The Academy love to give awards out to older actors almost as a lifetime achievement award. So, it is pretty obvious to me she will win. The only negative is that she wasn’t the best lead actress in a film this year, I would have put around another 5 performances above hers. Harsh? Maybe, but it is the truth. Colman should get it, but I think Close will sadly.

Best Actor

Christian Bale (Vice)
Rami Malek (Bohemian Rhapsody)
Viggo Mortensen (Green Book)
Willem Defoe (At Eternity’s Gate)
Bradley Cooper (A Star Is Born)

Who Should Win –  Christian Bale
Who Will Win – Rami Malek

Christian Bale all day every day for me. He played the villain so well in Vice and although he is the heavy favourite, the Oscar could still go and probably will go to Malek. He was the strongest thing in Bohemian Rhapsody. I feel they will want a couple of new faces up there for the wins, My surprise pick though is Willem Defoe he could come out of nowhere with a win.

Best Supporting Actress

Amy Adams (Vice)
Regina King (If Beale Street Could Talk)
Emma Stone (The Favourite)
Rachel Weisz (The Favourite)
Marina de Tavira (Roma)

Who Should Win – Regina King
Who Will Win – Regina King

It hurts me to say that as Stone and Weisz were wonderful in The Favourite and Adams always delivers on the big stage. But Regina King has hopefully now broken out with this performance. She deserves some good lead roles that I know she can handle with a plum. Someone just needs to get writing them for her.

Best Supporting Actor

Mahershala Ali (Green Book)
Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?)
Sam Elliott (A Star Is Born)
Sam Rockwell (Vice)
Adam Driver (BlacKkKlansman)
Who Should Win – Mahershala Ali
Who Will Win – Mahershala Ali

I am sure Richard E. Grant gave a great performance, but it surely has to go to Ali. A two horse race if there ever was one, but I think that Ali’s performance was just so much stronger than the rest of the field.

Best Foreign Language Picture

Shoplifters (Japan)
Capernaum (Lebanon)
Roma (Mexico)
Cold War (Poland)
Never Look Away (Germany)

Who Should Win – Shoplifters
Who Will Win – Roma

I love Shoplifters, it was one of my favourite films of 2018, but sadly for it and everything else this year Roma came out. Roma has to at least come away with this one. If it doesn’t then it will get Best Picture as I can’t imagine it being snubbed twice. Cold War is also a strong contender though…

Best Original Screenplay

Deborah Davis & Tony McNamara (The Favourite)
Adam McKay (Vice)
Alfonso Cuaron (Roma)
Nick Vallelonga, Brian Currie & Peter Farrelly (Green Book)
First Reformed by (Paul Shrader)

Who Should Win – The Favourite
Who Will Win – The Favourite

Green Book would have won this one I think if the Farrelly business had not of gotten in the way. But it would have been a tough one to pick from. The Favourite is so good and it would be a deserved win for it if it did succeed here.

Best Animated Feature

Spiderman: Into the Spiderverse
Incredibles 2
Isle of Dogs
Ralph Breaks the Internet

Who Should Win – Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse
Who Will Win – Spider-Man: Into the Spider-verse

I mean, there is no more of a dead-on certainty than this right? If anything other than Spider-Man wins, I will be truly shocked. I will be shOok y’all…

Best Adapted Screenplay

Joel and Ethan Coen (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs)
Barry Jenkins (If Beale Street Could Talk)
Spike Lee, Charlie Wachtel, David Rabinowitz & Kevin Willmott (BlacKkKlansman)
Eric Roth, Bradley Cooper & Will Fetters (A Star Is Born)
Can You Ever Forgive Me? By Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty

Who Should Win – If Beale Street Could Talk
Who Will Win – BlacKkKlansman

One of the toughest categories for me actually, I think If Beale Street should take it, but I think the Academy will prop for BlacKkKlansman. If Spike Lee doesn’t win Best Director then he will go home with this one.

Best Original Score

Black Panther
If Beale Street Could Talk
Mary Poppins Returns
Isle of Dogs

Who Should Win – BlacKkKlansman
Who Will Win  If Beale Street Could Talk

I really love the If Beale Street Could Talk score. But for me, BlacKkKlansman was just that bit more superior. Though it is another category that is a coin toss.

Best Original Song

“When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings” from The Ballad of Buster Scruggs
“All The Stars” from Black Panther
“The Place Where Lost Things Go” from Mary Poppins Returns
“Shallow” from A Star Is Born
“I’ll Fight” from RBG

Who Should Win – Shallow
Who Will Win – Shallow

As if it was going to be anyone else this year…

Best Cinematography

Alfonso Cuaron (Roma)
Caleb Deschanel (Never Look Away)
Lukasz Zal (Cold War)
Robbie Ryan (The Favourite)
Matthew Libatique (A Star Is Born)

Who Should Win – Roma
Who Will Win – Roma

I think this will be the only solo award Cuaron will go home with on the night. He did tremendous work, especially considering the circumstances as his original cinematographer had to leave the production. A very tough field though, so don’t be surprised if Lukasz Zal is a surprise winner.

Best Documentary Feature

Hale County This Morning, This Evening
Free Solo
Mind the Gap
Of Fathers and Sons

Who Should Win – Free Solo
Who Will Win – Free Solo

Having got this category so wrong in my nomination predictions I have true fear for who I choose to win. I feel it is a toss-up between Free Solo and RBG. The camera work and direction required for Free Solo should push it over the line. Though don’t be surprised if RBG wins. I still can’t understand why Three Identical Strangers didn’t get through these final nominations.

Best Visual Effects

Avengers: Infinity War
Solo: A Star Wars Story
Ready Player One
First Man
Christopher Robin

Who Should Win – Ready Player One
Who Will Win – Avengers: Infinity Wars

The number of characters and little easter eggs within Ready Player One made it a more enjoyable film than it had any right to be if anything all of the credit for making Ready Player One as good as was can only go to the Special Effects team. A great piece of work, but I think it will go to Avengers, because Disney…

Best Costume Design

Ruth Carter (Black Panther)
Sandy Powell (The Favourite)
Alexandra Byrne (Mary Queen of Scots)
Sandy Powell (Mary Poppins Returns)
Mary Zophres (Ballad of Buster Scruggs)

Who Should Win – Black Panther
Who Will Win – The Favourite

One of the things I adored from Black Panther was the costume design, there was such detail with every character costuming that you had to be impressed. Especially in such a large scale production. But, sadly I think The Favourite will sneak home with the Oscar as the Academy do love a good period piece.

Best Film Editing

The Favourite
Bohemian Rhapsody
Green Book

Who Should Win – The Favourite
Who Will Win – Vice

I have a feeling that Vice will walk away with this one as the editing was super crisp and one of its strengths, whereas the editing in The Favourite, although better, in my opinion, was a lot more subtle.

Best Sound Mixing

Black Panther
A Star Is Born
Bohemian Rhapsody
First Man

Who Should Win – Bohemian Rhapsody
Who Will Win – Bohemian Rhapsody

I have one for Bohemian Rhapsody over A Star Is Born purely because I think The Academy will only give A Star Is Born the original song award. Also, one of the few positives of Bohemian Rhapsody was that the sound mixing was very good. Especially during the final scene.

Best Sound Editing

A Quiet Place
Black Panther
Bohemian Rhapsody
First Man

Who Should Win – A Quiet Place
Who Will Win – A Quiet Place

I mean, come on, this should not be a surprise in the slightest, the sound editing was astounding. A film based on characters not making sounds needs another level of sound editing. To me, it is a no brainer, but I can see First Man perhaps nabbing this, which would cause me to be furious.

Best Production Design

Hannah Beachler (Black Panther)
Nathan Crowley (First Man)
Fiona Crumbie (The Favourite)
John Myhre (Mary Poppins Returns)
Eugenio Caballero (Roma)

Who Should Win – The Favourite
Who Will Win – The Favourite

This is a battle to the wire between The Favourite and Roma. Roma has the amazing story of how they found furniture that Cuaron remembered from his childhood and somehow got it together for the film. Whereas The Favourite’s production design was amazing with its detail and intricacies. I think The Favourite will prevail but by a whisker.

Best Makeup

Mary Queen of Scots

Who Should Win – Border
Who Will Win – Vice

Border had some amazing makeup after I checked it out. But my money is on Vice as they love that kind of transformations, otherwise, Stan & Ollie would be nominated here instead of Mary Queen of Scots, which deserved nominations, just not in this category.

Best Animated Short Film

Best Documentary Short

Period End of Sentence

Best Live Action Short Film
