Last weeks trailers 25th Feb

It is a new week and that means there has been a tonne of new movie trailers released for us to look at. Have you had a chance to have a little look at them yet? If not then welcome to your one-stop shop for last week’s trailers. I will be adding a little optimism gage after each trailer, to let you know how I really feel about the film after watching each trailer… If my opinion matters (which considering some of the trailers come out, maybe not!) Anyway! Let’s get right into it, shall we?

This week is a bit more family orientated with two animation trailers, two singer based biopics (one real the other fake) a western and a crime-noir.

The Kid (8 March USA)

On the run in the American Southwest, a boy encounters the infamous outlaw Billy the Kid and the legendary lawman Pat Garrett

Everything looked good about this film except for Dean DeHaan who with every film I see him in is trying to channel Leonardo Di Caprio more and more. Seeing Chris Pratt try and be the villain of the piece is a little jarring and hopefully, in a second trailer, we will get to see more of that, as for now his big beard and scowl isn’t fooling anyone. This looks like it could be quite good, but I have been wrong before…

The Highwaymen (29th March)

Former Texas Rangers Frank Hamer and Maney Gault join forces to try and capture notorious outlaws Bonnie Parker and Clyde Barrow.

The first Netflix film has come up and boy is it a cracker. Kevin Costner and Woody Harrelson is a pairing I never knew I needed in my life and I like how this just isn’t a straight-up film about Bonny & Clyde as we have seen that story many times (it feels like anyway). This one looks great and I am quite excited about it. If it is any good it will be a shame to see it released in the middle of the year as it could have been a potential awards contender. I felt the same with Disobedience, which was just thrown in a random release date. But Netflix is different as distributors and if they believe in it, they will push it. I hope it is as good as the trailer presents itself to be.

Her Smell (12th April)

A ’90s punk rock superstar who once filled arenas with her grungy all-female trio, now plays smaller venues while grappling with motherhood, bandmates, record company executives, and a new generation eager to usurp her stardom. 

A film about a declining punk rock star that has a trailer cut (or at least the first half of the trailer) cut in an almost punk rock way is an excellent choice to get my attention. Elizabeth Moss looks like a powerhouse in this role where she gets to show her full range as she is front and centre in the trailer with the supporting cast not given too much time. Reviews from festivals have been very good and I have the feeling that the film will be chaotic and abrasive, much like it’s lead character.

Dragged Across Concrete (19 April)

Police partners descend into the criminal underworld after they are suspended for assaulting a suspect on video.

If reviews from the Venice International Film Festival are to go by then this film could be very good. I feel the trailer was a little too long and perhaps showed too much, but with a film with action sequences, this is to be expected. They have me sold even with a Vince Vaughn, who can be so hit or miss. Also, there was probably a bit more comedy in the trailer than I was expecting. This looks pretty decent and as it is from S. Craig Zahler (Bone Tomahawk), he will not be subtle with whatever violence is present.

The Secret Life of Pets 2 (7th June)

The Secret Life of Pets 2 will follow summer 2016’s blockbuster about the lives our pets lead after we leave for work or school each day. I.E. no synopsis for us!

I didn’t catch the first Secret Life of Pets, but I was working in a cinema when it was out and the kids seemed to love the hell out of it. So, sitting down to watch this trailer I had very low expectations and they were far exceeded. Yes, it was very silly and childish, but it is a film aimed at children… I think. I really enjoyed it and enjoyed it enough to want to check out the first film to see if it is worth watching this one when it is released.

Ugly Dolls (3rd May)

An animated adventure in which the free-spirited UglyDolls confront what it means to be different, struggle with a desire to be loved, and ultimately discover who you truly are is what matters most.

I felt nothing for this trailer, none of it grasped me like Secret Life of Pets 2 did. It could be the fact that I love animals and I am maybe not as fond of weird looking toys. I was bored through this one sadly. It looks like it is possibly aimed at the very young, or at least I hope it is as I can’t imagine too many people being enthused enough to take their kids to this. Time or a second trailer will tell, but for now, it could be one to dodge.

Poms (10th May)

POMS is a comedy about a group of women who form a cheerleading squad at their retirement community, proving that you’re never too old to ‘bring it!’

I will be totally honest and admit that this film isn’t for me, but I have to be impartial and I did think it looked like a harmless bit of fun to the point where I am sure there would be a good few laughs in there for even someone as miserable as me to enjoy!

Rocketman (17th May)

An epic musical fantasy about the uncensored human story of Sir Elton John’s breakthrough years.

That was a pretty amazing trailer right? This looks like everything that Bohemian Rhapsody should have been. If it looks like Bohemian Rhapsody that is because Dexter Fletcher came in to direct the rest of the film and reshoots. The little clip that got me was Elton (Taran Egerton) obviously not coping well while being readied for the stage and as soon as he is given the bat and near enough for the crowd to see him he changes. Great acting from Egerton and from what I understand he actually does all of his own singing. So what you hear isn’t a dubbing, like in Bohemian Rhapsody. The only negative I have to this is that it isn’t released closer to prime award dates as it may be forgotten by award season. I am excited about this one.

That’s it for this week, I am excited for the majority of these and with a bit more information some of the others will help sway me to the positive side.
